“In the early 1900s, when she was just a child, my grandmother immigrated with her family to the U.S. from Chihuahua, Mexico, fleeing the violence of the Revolution. She eventually settled in Bakersfield, California, where she raised ten children through the Great Depression and World War II. Every Christmas she made tamales as her gift to the family, as is tradition in Mexico. My mother passed the tradition on to me, and I love sharing it with all who wish to learn,” said Hughes.
