…. think of the answers you might hear to this question … “at my favorite bakery”, “a coffee cart on the way to the bus station”, “the drive thru coffee kiosk in the parking lot”.
Keeping an eye on what I’m eating this month, I’ve noticed some “can’t do without imports” like pepper and coffee !
Well, here’s an ultra-local alternative. This answer will wow them at the office!
Your breakfast menu: I’ll call it “eggs a’la invasive weeds”, available right outside your door …
hard boiled eggs (from your chickens, or your neighbors if you don’t have your own)
seasoned with ground seeds of Nigella damascena ** – Love-in-a-Mist, tastes like black pepper – no imports ..
roasted dandelion root coffee
blackberries
Thanks to Cat Cook for this “did you know ..” inspiration.
(… I haven’t tried this yet, but I sure know where to get some.)
** Nigella damascena, that ever present Love-In-a-Mist flower in the garden … you know the one that looks like a fairy-garden in early summer, and spreads like crazy when those seed balloons open.
It has edible black seeds, that taste peppery. Our backyard variety is a cousin of the old world spice and medicinal, Nigella sativa, “black cumin” that has been used traditionally in cooking, (and reportedly to ‘cure everything except death’.)
Also from Cat, your recipe for today: (I have tried this … its good!)
Dandelion Coffee
. dig (big) dandelion roots in spring or fall, before flowers bud or bloom, and when soil is moist
- be sure that you know there is no spray or chemicals where you are harvesting -
. wash the roots, then wash them again
. chop the roots into tiny pieces – before they dry out
. spread the pieces on a cookie sheet, and roast in a low oven, until dry
. steep in hot water in a tea strainer or just in the cup
. save the rest for later, dried pieces save a long time
. Cat says, “eat the stuff at the bottom of your cup … in your oatmeal” !
