Mike — When we first started, I saw the potential for a fridge full of rotting food, so I decided to use up that stuff first. Occasionally I’ll score free stuff at work which isn’t local (like bananas). I can’t say no to free, organic sustenance. I think you have to be practical. Be as local as possible, but science projects in the fridge don’t help anyone. (Unless, of course, it’s science fair time.)
As for coffee, I totally agree with you. Love the greens in my salad, but a good fair trade, shade grown, organic coffee doesn’t make my barista soul feel guilty in the least.
